Meridian

Perfect Harmony of Exquisite Sound & Bold Design

Meridian has been designing and creating state-of-the-art audio and video home entertainment systems for over 35 years. Meridian’s systems and speakers offer pure quality in both form and function by combining the most ground-breaking functional performance with the ability to be incorporated seamlessly with any design aspiration.

Meridian’s incredible innovations can transport the listener to the emotions of a live performance. The most important thing for a performer is to connect with the audience, wherever they are. Meridian’s innovative approach to sound has enabled this to happen, by creating astonishingly lifelike-sounding speakers.

The Beauty of the Machine

The Beauty of the Machine

Digital signal processing (DSP) – which Meridian has pioneered and adapted for the home audio market – allows them to build individually-controlled loudspeakers that deliver as much pure quality sound as a conventional speaker eight times the physical volume. Meanwhile, unique Meridian Room Correction smoothes out room resonances for clearer sound and better imaging, whatever the room layout or combination of materials used.

Another major issue in audio reproduction is the ‘boundary effect’, which occurs when loudspeakers are placed close to the walls, resulting in the bass notes being over-enhanced at the cost of other, higher-frequency sounds. All Meridian loudspeakers – including the unobtrusive in-wall designs – can be individually fine-tuned to optimize sound quality wherever they are positioned in the room.

Crafted for a Lifetime

The creation of the different elements that make up a Meridian home entertainment system comprises a unique combination of traditional techniques with the latest manufacturing technology. Many aspects of the building of a Meridian product are carried out by hand, whether it is the making of a loudspeaker cabinet from layers of carefully-chosen materials or the hand-sewing of the leather cover by specialist artisans.

But Meridian’s hand-made pedigree is not limited solely to cabinetry, however exquisitely crafted. It is simply impossible to insert some electronic components on to a printed circuit board by machine: they may be too bulky or require precision alignment, or need installation with special care. In some cases, components will be inserted on to the board by hand and wave-soldered. On other occasions, the component will be both inserted and soldered by hand. When the product is complete, there is a whole additional raft of tests and calibration processes to be carried out, often by hand, before the product can be delivered.

The Search for Authenticity

There are some inherent differences in the way the ear picks up low and high frequency sounds, and an awareness of this provides some insight into why Meridian products are designed the way they are, particularly the unique shapes of Meridian loudspeakers.

Low notes and sounds are not very directional. As a result, loudspeakers specifically designed to reproduce low notes (known as ‘woofers’) can be placed almost anywhere in the room and still be heard perfectly. They can even be located conveniently out of sight behind furniture, with little or no adverse effect on their performance as part of the overall audio system.

Higher notes are extremely directional. That’s why, for the best quality all-round audio reproduction, loudspeakers which focus on delivering these higher notes (often called ‘tweeters’) should ideally be placed at ear level, and not obstructed. This is also part of the reason why Meridian loudspeakers are “human-sized” The key sounds for listening to speech and the subtleties of music normally fall somewhere in the mid-range. And being mainly directional too, the main loudspeakers of any audio system should also be sited at ear level for the optimum audio experience.

Loudspeakers

The Essence of Authentic Sound

Digital Signal Processing (DSP) technology provides the foundation for every Meridian loudspeaker. A completely integrated audio system featuring multiple power amps, precision DACs and unique technologies, Meridian DSP loudspeakers provide more output, more bass and significant control advantages. In-Wall Loudspeakers

Building on the performance of the DSP520, the DSP640 is designed for the most demanding of listeners. The DSP640 shares the same visual width and sonic character of the DSP520, making them perfect companions in a Meridian Digital Theatre.

The DSP520 & DSP640 inherits the latest technologies from Meridian’s DSP7200 including Enhanced Bass Alignment and Centre Elevation, providing incredibly lifelike and spacious sound. This makes the DSP520 a perfect choice for stereo or full surround with virtually no visual impact to the decor.

Design

DSP640
DSP640, like the entire range of Meridian In-wall Loudspeakers, is built around an aluminum enclosure. This enclosure forms the back of the loudspeaker itself, while the drivers are mounted to another metal extrusion. This provides an extremely stiff “box” and with special dampening material, has no sound of its own to color the music. This makes it ideal for an in-wall loudspeaker.

A slender, paintable grill is magnetically attached to the loudspeaker. This allows for the grill to be custom painted or wallpapered to match any décor, while the magnetic mounting system ensures secure grill installation without unsightly hardware

DSP520
The DSP520 takes advantage of new DSP that allows a flexibility of mounting options unmatched by any passive or active loudspeaker. Other in-wall designs are affected by any material placed “in front” of the loudspeaker, including their own grill. The DSP520 has unique DSP settings to allow it to be mounted behind a fabric wall, theater screen, or even its own paintable grill without changing its sound. This provides absolute freedom of mounting without sonic compromise.

You enjoy a clearer feeling of the instruments and their interrelationship.

Performance

DSP640
The DSP640 features dual-long throw woofers for extended bass, and dynamic range that is perfect for today’s high-resolution music and movies. All of this adds up to floor-standing loudspeaker performance, without a single inch of floor space.

DSP520
Integral to the DSP520’s design is Meridian’s Wide Range Driver Technology. This technology eliminates the traditional crossover between a tweeter and mid-range driver found in every other design and enables the DSP520 to have unmatched mid-range quality especially with voices.

In-Ceiling & In-Wall Loudspeaker

Meridian’s in-ceiling and in-wall loudspeakers use identical DSP Digital Active technology to our free-standing models, and share the same accurate, authentic sound, making it easy to build systems that combine in-wall and free-standing designs.

A winner of the 2015 CE Pro Best Award and finalist in CEDIA’s ‘Best New Product for 2015’, the DSP320 is the latest addition to Meridian’s installation loudspeaker range. It is the most compact of the three, at just 300mm square and only 100mm deep. In addition to in-wall applications, it can also be used in-ceiling where required.

Design

The DSP320 features an 85mm wide-range driver and an oval bass driver, combining high performance with compact size. The drivers are mounted into the front of the enclosure itself, while a separate upper case holds the electronics, consisting of DSP, digital audio converters and an individual 80W Class D amplifier per driver.

Dimensions

FIFO Buffering

Each sample of a digital recording must remain evenly spaced in time. Unfortunately, timing can vary, especially when reading discs. This is “jitter”, degrading music’s sense of space and diminishing realism. Meridian’s multiple “First In, First Out” buffering system minimises jitter, ensuring perfect timing and improved clarity. You enjoy a clearer feeling of the instruments and their interrelationship.

Performance

The use of a wide-range driver across the speech band helps create a loudspeaker with an effortless sound that remains clear, open and spacious, even at high listening levels. Meridian’s knowledge of psychoacoustics and expertise in DSP technology enables the sound image to be lowered, creating an immersive and far more authentic sound – something that cannot be achieved in a conventional passive loudspeaker.

The DSP320 features Enhanced Bass Alignment (EBA) to provide accurate time-alignment of a wide range of frequencies across the range of both drivers – a significant advance over conventional time-alignment, which can only be performed on a per-driver basis.

Special Edition Loudspeakers

The Pinnacle of Loudspeaker Technology

Surround Sound

Perfect for any High Performance Home Theater

20 years ago, in 1994, Meridian released the world’s first Digital Surround Controller, the 565. That same year Meridian entered the emerging home theatre market with another first, the Meridian Digital Theatre. This concept was based on the company’s new range of digital loudspeakers and the 565. The Digital Theatre and the 565 won more than ten awards in the first twelve months of production.

G65 Surround Controller

G65 continues this legacy with high performance, connectivity, and ease of use. When partnered with the HD621, the G65 features a comprehensive input capability to accommodate the widest range of audio and video sources. Now equipped with SpeakerLink and balanced analogue outputs, G65 is equally at home in Meridian Digital Theatres and with analogue loudspeaker-based systems.

G65, named in honour of 565, is now the definitive surround controller second only to the flagship 861, but deriving many of its capabilities and performance from its big brother. A worthy successor to the world’s first Digital Surround Controller, the 565.
