Technology Review: Favorites from 2019

As we welcome the new year, our Spire team reflects on some of our favorite technology from this past year. Here is a list of our favorite technology along with some products to watch in 2020.

Sonos Portable WiFi Speaker

Introduced this past year, the Move is the first battery-powered Sonos speaker built for the outdoors but great for indoor listening. Spire’s Specialist, Jeremy Turpen loves the versatility of the weatherproof and drop-resistant speaker. For a compact unit, it produces a surprisingly deep bass, a wide soundscape and automatic Truplay tuning that perfectly balances the sound for the surrounding space and type of music. With the added benefit of Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, you can use hands-free voice controls to play music, check the news and more.

For the first time in 40 years, vinyl records were set to outsell CDs in 2019. Even though turntables have been around for decades, there has been a surge of popularity in the last few years. Spire’s Technical Sales Engineer, Tom Golden suggests E.A.T (European Audio Team), who manufacture beautiful, high-end turntables. The tables are all manual (user will start and stop table, select speed, and place cartridge on vinyl manually), maximizing the performance as there are no nonessential motors in the system. Tom is looking forward to the newest turntable, the E.A.T Fortissimo, which should be released in 2020.

Meridian Speakers

Meridian launched two new series of speakers this year. The DSP750 In-Wall Digital Active Loudspeaker and the DSW.2 Digital Active Subwoofer. Meridian’s award winning speakers are known to produce unbelievable life-like sound. These speakers are no exception. They are a powerful addition that are perfect for delivering discrete yet impactful sound in any home cinema or media room application.

Samsung The Frame TV

A consistent fan favorite, the Samsung Frame TV is always sure to impress. Spire’s project manager, Jason Mackie would agree. The Frame TV is a statement piece that blends seamlessly into a home’s décor by transforming into gallery-like artwork when the TV is not being viewed. The Frame can display exclusive works of art ranging from paintings to pictures to personal photo libraries to suit every mood and style. There’s no limit to how the Samsung Frame can be used. It goes beyond entertainment and becomes an expression of you.

Roon & Qello Subscription

For Mike Waligorski, Spire’s North Director, it’s all about music streaming. With a Roon app, you can manage your music collection from many sources, and build an interconnected digital library using enhanced information from Roon. You can browse and play music on all your devices and audio outputs including Airplay, Squeezebox, and Meridian network players. It makes it easy to listen to high-resolution, multi-protocol, multi-room streaming throughout your whole home.

As for concerts and music documentation, Mike uses the Stingray Qello app. Just pick a genre and enjoy a festival of non-stop musical geniuses or indulged in a documentary about some of the greatest legends.

Technology to Look Out for in 2020

Delos Darwin
In 2019, Spire became a partner of  Delos, the global leader in wellness real estate,  to offer the world’s first wellness intelligence platform. DARWIN Home Wellness Intelligence is a whole home wellness ecosystem featuring air purification, water filtration and lighting that mimics natural daylight all designed to enhance your health and well-being. Spire looks forward to this new partnership.

MicroLED TVs
In early 2019, Samsung shocked the industry with their 219-inch MicroLED TV called the Wall. MicroLED is the first brand-new display technology to be commercialized in more than a decade. The last was OLED. Unlike OLED, MicroLED can deliver true black values as well as brightness and color that rivals the OLED TV’s but with no danger of burn-in. However, the sheer size of the Wall TV doesn’t make it applicable for all spaces but Samsung is working on releasing a 75-inch version. The smaller version may be released in 2020.
